The Carroll County Birth Certificates Index was compiled by Karen Sauer, intern for the Illinois Regional Archives Depository (IRAD) System at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. The database indexes nearly 10,000 births that were recorded by the county clerk's office in Carroll County. The information in the database was extracted from the Carroll County Birth Certificates (IRAD Accession 1/0229/12).

Each entry found in the index contains the following categories of information: the certificate number; the name, sex and date and place of birth of the child; the names of the mother and father; and remarks about peculiarities of the birth (e.g., a stillbirth; a multiple birth; illegitimacy). Every attempt was made to obtain accurate spellings of names. However, it was sometimes difficult to decipher handwriting in some entries. Therefore, when searching this index, we suggest that researchers check alternative spellings of names if they do not find an entry for the name for which they are searching.
 

Birth certificates show the name, sex, race and date of birth of the child; the place of birth; the names, ages and places of birth of the mother and father; the residence of the mother; the occupation of the father; the name and residence of the physician or midwife; and the date the certificate was returned to the county clerk.

Stillbirth certificates include the names of the mother and father; the date of stillbirth; the sex and place of birth of the child; the residence of the mother; the period of utero-gestation; the cause, if known, of the stillbirth; the name of the physician or midwife and their place of residence; the name of the undertaker; and the place of burial.

Copies of the birth certificates found in this index may be obtained by mail or telephone. Inquiries should be made directly to the Illinois Regional Archives Depository (IRAD) at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. IRAD cannot accept requests by e-mail at this time.
