Database of Illinois
Civil War Veterans Serving in the U.S. Navy
This database indexes the Archives’ record
series, Roster of Illinois Men in the U.S. Navy During the Civil War
(RS
301.022). This record of approximately 3,000 men came from the
Illinois Adjutant General. The database includes the name and
birthplace of each sailor.
The database was created and donated to the
Illinois State Archives by Fred Delap of Kansas, Illinois. Delap, a
volunteer with the Edgar County Genealogical Society, has also
indexed Illinois veterans of the War of 1812, Black Hawk War,
Mexican War, Civil War, and Spanish-American War.
Photocopies
A photocopy of a sailor’s roster entry can be
obtained from the original record by providing his name and
birthplace as well as war and branch of service. For each sailor,
the record includes name; birthplace; rank; date, place, and term of
enlistment; occasionally the place enlistment credited to; names of
vessels served on; and final disposition (e.g., date of discharge,
desertion, death). If you would like an unofficial and uncertified
photocopy of the sailor’s entry in the record series, Roster of
Illinois Men in the U.S. Navy During the Civil War (RS
301.022), please include your postal mailing address. As a
result of limitations on staff research time, Archives staff can
photocopy no more than 2 entries per request.
If you have any questions about or problems with
this database, please feel free to contact the Archives. We will
attempt to answer your question or resolve your difficulty as
quickly as possible.
